AllMusic calls his work "smoking songs" and heavy guitar full of fire and passion, noting his rough-edged voice filled with feeling. Blues Music Magazine says he's "heartfelt singing and merciless guitar with a wicked icy burn," calling him one of the truly gifted blues artists of his generation. Living Blues observes that he "just play[s] what you feel, be real about it, and enjoy yourself"lessons Albert Collins taught him. The self-taught left-handed Montoya mastered his craft under Collins' tutelage, incorporating lessons from mentors like Collins (for whom he originally drummed) and UK legend John Mayall. Since his first solo album in 1995which won the Blues Music Award for Best New ArtistMontoya's endlessly inventive guitar work and passionate vocals have kept him at the top of the blues world. His new Alligator Records album, Writing On The Wall (his sixth with the label), delivers what he calls one of his best records ever. For the first time on Alligator, he brought his road-tested bandkeyboardist and songwriter Jeff Paris (Keb Mo, Bill Withers), bassist Nathan Brown, and drummer Rena Beaversto the studio. Between the camaraderie of long-time bandmates and the sheer talent involved, the results left Coco "over the moon.
