About the Event
In autumn 1982 Michael Aston left his South Wales home for the leafy but worn elegance of 56 St Georges Square in Pimlico, London (passport required). After meeting drummer James Chater, he formed his first group briefly called Slavorian. Ian Hudson joined on guitar and twin brother J followed with vocals; they began their ascent into the UK underground scene. A demo led to a deal with Situation 2 Records, a Beggers Banquet subsidiary. Their London debut at Covent Gardens Rock Garden Shaving ny necka well was followed by an E.P. (incidentally ALL ABOUT EVES marked Jezebel Regans piano and vocal debut). J managed to secure a spot on the I.C.A. Rock Weeka radical Art/Multimedia Event/Alternative Festival called YaBoo Lalla-Pallooza. The problem: they had no name! The brothers were already patronizing St Martins School of Fashion, where Jezebel affectionately mocked his long vermillion hair. Michael, as a poor limping child from a broken leg, was nicknamed Gene after Gene Vincent; someone quipped Does Gene Love Jezebel? ALL ABOARD! The band recorded screaming for Emmalene with Albi Delucaa guitar player of great artistrysoon after the triple A sided Bruises/ (a stellar recording) Punch Drunk / Brando. In 1984 the band recorded the debut album Promise, with Ian Hudson returning to guitar, Steve Marshall on bass and Richard Hawkins replacing the brilliant but odd Murphy on drums (making the band eighty percent Welsh blood). PROMISE has since been recognized as a Genre classic (Gothic) by Alt press in 95. 1984 was also problematic: sessions with John Peel and Kid Jensen The Highlights Recording with John Cale in New York bore no fruit, though wonderful in its own way. That same year the brothers sold the release titled Some of the Best of Gene Loves Jezebel (Avalanche Records). Michael is currently working on a new solo record while the twins write material for The Pre Raphaelite Brothers. Today founding member Michael Aston owns the Gene Loves Jezebel trademark worldwide and continues touring and recording as Gene Loves Jezebel.
