Mingus Big Band

The Mingus Big Band performs only works by composer-bassist Charles Mingus, who marked his 100th birthday in 2022. Building on the strengths of the Mingus Dynasty septet Sue Mingus formed after his death in 1979 and the 1989 Epitaph orchestra, she created this 14-piece ensemble in 1991 to feature fresh arrangements of Mingus compositions in a larger band format that he desired but could not always assemble during his lifetime. The dynamic structure encourages deep explorations and evolving ideas of Mingus Music while providing space for individual artistic expression. Drawing from rotating lineups of established and emerging musicians, the Mingus Big Band is highly sought after by festivals and prestigious venues worldwide. The group has twelve recordings to its credit, seven nominated for Grammys, and one win in 2011 with Live at Jazz Standard. A new album, The Charles Mingus Centennial Sessions, was released in October 2022 and received a Grammy nomination. The second volume is scheduled for release in 2024.
