Mingus Big Band

A large ensemble dedicated to the music of Charles Mingus, celebrating his centennial in 2022. Building on the foundation laid by Sue Minguss posthumous Dynasty septet and her 1989 Epitaph orchestra, this fourteen-piece group was formed in 1991 to present fresh arrangements of Mingus compositions within a larger format he envisioned but could not always assemble during his life. The flexible structure allows for profound explorations and evolving interpretations of Minguss music while giving each musician room for personal expression. Featuring rotating lineups of established and emerging artists, the group is highly requested by festivals and major venues globally. They have twelve albums to their name, seven Grammy nominations, and one win in 2011 with Live at Jazz Standard. The Charles Mingus Centennial Sessions album was released in October 2022 and received a Grammy nomination; its second volume will be issued in 2024.
