Mingus Big Band

The Mingus Big Band presents works by composer-bassist Charles Mingus, marking his centennial in 2022. Building on the legacy of Sue Minguss posthumous Dynasty septet (formed after his death in 1979) and the 1989 Epitaph orchestra, she established this fourteen-piece ensemble in 1991 to realize new arrangements of Mingus compositions for a larger format he envisioned but could not consistently assemble during his lifetime. The flexible structure fosters profound explorations and evolving interpretations of Minguss music while allowing individual artists space for personal expression. Featuring a rotating roster of seasoned and emerging musicians, the group is highly requested by festivals and distinguished venues globally. With twelve recorded albumsincluding seven Grammy nominations and one win in 2011 with Live at Jazz Standardthe band has earned significant acclaim. A second volume of The Charles Mingus Centennial Sessions, released in October 2022, was nominated for a Grammy; the sequel is scheduled for release in 2024.
