Mingus Big Band

A large ensemble dedicated to the music of Charles Mingus, celebrating his centennial in 2022. Following the success of the Mingus Dynasty and the Epitaph orchestra, Sue Mingus formed this fourteen-piece group in 1991 to present fresh arrangements of her fathers works in a format he envisioned but could not always achieve during his lifetime. The flexible structure allows for deep explorations and evolving interpretations of his compositions while giving each musician space for personal expression. Featuring a rotating roster of established and emerging artists, the Mingus Big Band is highly requested by festivals and major venues worldwide. The group has twelve recorded albums, seven Grammy nominations, and one win in 2011 with their live recording at Jazz Standard. A new album titled The Charles Mingus Centennial Sessions was released in October 2022 and received a Grammy nomination; a second volume is scheduled for release in 2024.
