Mingus Big Band

The Mingus Big Band performs only works by composer and bassist Charles Mingus, who turned one hundred in 2022. Building on the strengths of the Mingus Dynasty septet formed after his death in 1979 and the 1989 Epitaph orchestra, Sue Mingus created this fourteen-piece ensemble in 1991 to present new arrangements of Mingus compositions in a larger band format that he desired but could not consistently organize during his lifetime. The dynamic structure encourages deep explorations and ever-evolving interpretations of Mingus Music while providing a platform for individual artistic expression. Drawing from a rotating roster of established and emerging musicians, the Mingus Big Band is highly sought after by festivals and prestigious venues worldwide. The band has twelve recordings to its credit, seven nominated for Grammy Awards, and one win in 2011 with Live at Jazz Standard. A new album, The Charles Mingus Centennial Sessions, was released in October 2022 and received a Grammy nomination. The second volume is scheduled for release in 2024.
