Maria Schneiders musical work has been praised by critics as deeply evocative, grand in scale, enchanting, and breathtakingly beautiful beyond any single genre classification. She and her ensemble of eighteen musicians have performed across concert venues globally, earning seven Grammy Awards, numerous Jazz Journalist Association honors, and multiple accolades from Downbeat and JazzTimes readers and critics polls. Schneiders compositions transcend stylistic boundaries, resulting in a diverse commissioning history that spans jazz to classical music and dance, including collaborations with David Bowie. She is among an exceptionally small group of artists to receive Grammy Awards across multiple genresboth for her jazz work and her classical contributionsas well as for her work with Bowie. Schneiders holds honorary doctorates from the University of Minnesota and Eastman School of Music. In 2019, the National Endowment for the Arts conferred upon her the nation's highest honor in jazz by naming her an NEA Jazz Master.
