About the Event
Isaiah J. Thompson received the 2023 American Pianists Awards and Cole Porter Fellowship in Jazz through the American Pianists Association. Hailing from West Orange, New Jersey, this pianist, bandleader, and composer began his musical training at The Calderone School of Music as a child before advancing with Jazz House Kids and NJPAC Jazz For Teens programs. He subsequently enrolled at The Juilliard School, earning both a Bachelor's degree in 2019 and a Master of Music degree in 2020. His professional engagements include performances with prominent musicians such as Ron Carter, John Pizzarelli, Christian McBride, Ccile McLorin Salvant, Steve Turre, and Buster Williams. His first recorded work appeared on the Handful of Keys album by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra featuring Wynton Marsalis through Blue Engine Records. He has since issued several albums as a leader. Thompson contributed to the Golden Globe-nominated film score for Motherless Brooklyn, was designated a Steinway Artist, and received additional honors including the 2018 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award and second place in the 2018 Thelonious Monk Competition. In his performances, he aims to express love, spirit, and reverence while sharing personal experiences through his artistry and enduring passion for jazz music.
