About the Event
Live Wire Project presents Helen Sungs new album Jazz Plasticity, featuring pianist Helen Sung, saxophonist John Ellis, bassist Vicente Archer, drummer Kush Abadey, and DJ Wendel Patrick. The project was supported by the Chamber Music Americas New Jazz Works program, funded through the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Sung is an award-winning jazz composer and performer, a Guggenheim Fellow who studied at the University of Texas at Austin before earning her degree from the Thelonious Monk Institute (now the Herbie Hancock Institute) and winning the Mary Lou Williams Piano Competition. She has performed with Clark Terry, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Regina Carter, Terri Lyne Carrington, Cecile McLorin Salvant, and the Mingus Big Band. Sung teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Columbia Universitys Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute as its first jazz artist-in-residence, where she examined connections between jazz and neuroscience. A Steinway Artist, her playing combines crisp swing with inventive phrasing, drawing on blues foundations to create compelling rhythms that engage listeners while she introduces fresh musical ideas informed by her classical background.
