The Danny Jonokuchi Big Band is a seventeen-piece ensemble spanning both coasts, featuring established jazz legends alongside emerging talent, all under the direction of trumpeter, singer-songwriter, and arranger Danny Jonokuchi. Their most recent studio album, A Decade (2024), presents an all-star New York collective and documents the first ten years of Jonokuchis residency in the city. The record includes a performance of Ping Pong, which won the 2024 ISJAC Wayne Shorter Arranging Prize. The group has filled houses to capacity in Los Angeles and New York City at prestigious locations including Lincoln Center, Birdland Jazz Club, Dizzys Club, Vibrato, The Django, Mintons Playhouse, Vitellos, Catalina Jazz Club, The Ziegfeld Ballroom, and Gotham Hall. They were also honored with a performance at the Jazz at Lincoln Center 2024 Gala and contributed their prize-winning recording of One OClock Jump to the Late Night Basie album, a compilation that features the Count Basie Orchestra alongside many celebrated artists. Their repertoire includes compositions and award-winning arrangements by Jonokuchi ranging from swing-era nostalgia to contemporary works with complex melodies and lush harmonies. They have recorded or performed with Grammy-winning vocalists Nicole Zuraitis, Catherine Russell, and Sara Gazarek, as well as trumpeter Terell Stafford, Dick Oatts, Lucy Yeghiazaryian, Brianna Thomas, Alita Moses, and many others. Their recent releases include A Decade (Bandstand Presents), Past is Present (Bandstand Presents)featuring original compositions by Jonokuchi and co-composer Jordan Seigeland their 2023 album Voices (Outside In Music), which showcases eleven outstanding jazz vocalists from New York City. Voices has been called a masterpiece by Jerry Gordon of WPRB. Their albums have received critical acclaim, with international praise calling them an album in which every cut is prime (The New York Sun), crammed with reward (London Jazz News), and an aural feast (Jersey Jazz). Their music has also been featured on over a hundred radio stations nationwide reaching the top 100 in Jazz radio charts.
