About the Event
Catherine Russell hails from New York City, born into a celebrated family of musicians. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was an esteemed pianist and composer who also served as long-time musical director for Louis Armstrong. Her mother, the late Carline Ray, was a pioneering vocalist, guitarist, and bassist known for performing with groups such as International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams, and Sy Oliver. Catherine began her professional career at a young age. After earning honors from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, she toured and recorded with artists including Carrie Smith, Steely Dan, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, Levon Helm, Toshi Reagon, and Rosanne Cash, appearing on more than two hundred albums.
