About the Event
Allison Miller is an acclaimed drummer who has honed her craft across numerous musical genres. She appears on late-night television programs, provides rhythmic foundation for many of today's most cherished singer-songwriters, and receives critical praise for recordings made both as leader of her own ensemble Boom Tic Boom and with the all-star collective ARTEMIS. Miller draws upon her foundational expertise in improvisation to investigate every facet of musical expression. Critics have labeled her a Modern Jazz Icon in the Making; she has been named among Top 20 Jazz Drummers by Downbeat Magazine, and her composition Otis Was a Polar Bear appears on NPR's list of The 200 Greatest Songs by 21st Century Women. Miller served as Monterey Jazz Festivals 2019 Artist in Residence alongside bassist/producer Derrick Hodge. She was also the inaugural recipient of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundations Commissioning Grant. In 2019, Millers band Boom Tic Boomfeaturing pianist Myra Melford, violinist Jenny Scheinman, clarinetist Ben Goldberg, cornetist Kirk Knuffke, bassist Todd Sickafoose, and Miller on drums and compositionmarked its tenth anniversary with the release of their fifth album, Glitter Wolf. The Wall Street Journal observed that Boom Tic Boom possesses a razor-sharp precision reminiscent of classic drummer-led ensembles from 50 years agothe music of Art Blakey, Art Taylor, and Max Roach come to mindbut Ms. Millers band operates from a diverse sonic palette that is unmistakably contemporary. Boom Tic Boom has received critical acclaim, appearing on the Top 10 Jazz Albums lists for Downbeat, The LA Times, Jazz Journalists Association, and Something Else.
