About the Event
Oscar Rossignoli, a pianist of Honduran origin, weaves together diverse musical traditionsfrom his classical training to his deep love for Latin and North American jazzinto his compositions. He resides in New Orleans today, collaborating with top local jazz artists such as John Boutt, Jason Marsalis, Gladney, Amina Scott, Yusa, and others. His career includes work within the EXTENDED trio alongside Matt Booth and Brad Webb, plus leadership of both a quartet and a trio. Oscar completed his masters studies at the University of New Orleans, where he received the 20152016 ASCAP Louis Armstrong Scholar award and was named a finalist in the 2018 Ellis Marsalis International Jazz Piano Competition. Tonights program honors the legendary Thelonious Monk (19171982), an influential American jazz pianist and composer widely considered one of the pioneers of modern jazz. Known for his highly original playing stylecharacterized by angular melodies, unexpected pauses, percussive touch, and complex harmoniesMonk helped shape the bebop movement together with artists like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. He composed numerous jazz standards, including Round Midnight, Blue Monk, and Straight No Chaser, which remain widely performed today. Although his unconventional approach initially puzzled some listeners, Monks genius and innovation eventually earned him critical acclaim, cementing his legacy as one of the most distinctive and important figures in jazz history. Tonights performance includes Oscar Rossignoli on piano and Amina Scott on bass; drums are provided by Nygel Anderson.
