James Singleton Malabar LIVEJames Singleton Malabar stands among New Orleans' most sought-after bassists. That is not an overstatement. At sixty-six, he has worked with Chet Baker, Ellis Marsalis, Charlie Rich, John Scofield, and James Booker. Yet he transcends the role of dependable session player. He remains a founding member of Astral Project, which OffBeat has hailed as New Orleans' finest modern jazz ensemble, and since 2016 he has performed and recorded with Nolatet, another celebrated group. More importantly, Singleton has traveled far beyond New Orleans into the wider landscape of creative music and improvisation, collaborating on recordings for the respected underground label Astral Spirits with Chicago experimentalists Charles Rumback, Jim Baker, and Greg Ward. It is precisely these achievements that make MalabarSingleton's solo recording as a bandleadera remarkable work. At moments it feels romantic; at others, it appears chaotic. Singleton's compositional vision and leadership enable the musicians to expand freely while constructing an engaging narrative.Performances begin at 7:30pm and 9:30pm. Doors open at 7:00pm and 9:00pm respectively. The restaurant operates from 5pm until 10pm, offering dinner service before or after your concert. They can also request table reservations by email to reservations@snugjazz.com once their tickets have been purchased. Those without advance tickets receive first-come, first-served seating based on availability upon arrival. Please note: the full menu is not served inside the Music Room. Only charcuterie and cheese trays are available for service there. To maintain the quiet atmosphere essential to our intimate concerts, only cocktails and soft drinks may be ordered in the Music Room. We recommend arriving at least ninety minutes before your showtime to enjoy complete dinner service in the adjacent Dining Room prior to entering the Music Room for your concert.
