James Singleton Malabar LIVE James Singleton Malabar is among the most sought-after bassists in New Orleans. That is not an exaggeration. At sixty-six, he has worked with Chet Baker, Ellis Marsalis, and Charlie Rich alongside John Scofield and James Booker. Yet he stands beyond a dependable session player. He remains a central member of Astral Project, which OffBeat has called the finest contemporary jazz ensemble in New Orleans, and since 2016 he has performed and recorded as a founding member of Nolatet. More importantly, Singleton has traveled far beyond New Orleans into broader realms of creative music and improvisation, collaborating with Chicago experimentalists Charles Rumback, Jim Baker, and Greg Ward on recordings for the respected underground label Astral Spirits. It is precisely these reasons that Malabar, his full-length recording as a bandleader, stands as something extraordinary. At moments romantic, at others chaotic, Singletons writing and leadership allow the musicians to stretch out and present an engaging narrative. Shows begin at 7:30pm and 9:30pm with doors opening at 7:00pm and 9:00pm respectively. The restaurant remains open from 5pm until 10pm for dinner before or after your performance. Dinner service without advance concert tickets is first-come, first-served based on availability upon arrival. A gentle reminder: Snug Harbor does not serve the full menu inside the Music Room. We do offer cheese and charcuterie tray options. To preserve the integrity, quiet, and focus of our world-class intimate concerts, only the charcuterie, cocktails, and soft drinks are available for table service within the Music Room. However, we encourage you to arrive at least ninety minutes before your showtime in order to enjoy full, relaxing dinner service in the Dining Room right next door, then get seated in the Music Room for your ticketed performance.
