About the Event
Set in Seville around 1830, Carmen unfolds as a tale of passion, jealousy, and treachery. The opera follows Don José, a soldier whose duty is undone by the fiery gypsy factory-girl Carmen. He abandons his devoted sweetheart Micaëla to let her escape custody. Driven by desire, he leaves his military post to join the smugglers with whom Carmen associates. As Carmen's heart turns toward the dashing bullfighter Escamillo, Don José's jealousy curdles into obsession. In the gripping final act, outside Seville's bullring, Carmen arrives on Escamillo's armbut is stabbed to death by the heartbroken Don José, who has been waiting for her.
