About the Event
Bob James' musical journey spans over five decades, marked by constant evolution and global influence. His career began in Marshall, Missouri, where he was spotted at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in 1963 by Quincy Jones. That same year, he released his debut solo album, Bold Conceptions, on Mercury Records. Over the following years, James worked with Creed Taylor and recorded for artists such as Hank Crawford and Grover Washington Jr., before achieving widespread fame through CTI. He produced major hits for Paul Simon, Neil Diamond, Maynard Ferguson, and Kenny Loggins. Recognized as a pioneer of smooth jazz, his work also deeply impacted hip hop culture; many of his tracks have been sampled extensively. Songs like Nautilus (1974) and Take Me to the Mardi Gras (1975) are among the most frequently sampled in hip hop history, with thirty-two and forty-three recordings respectively drawing from them. The title track from Sign of the Times (1981) appears in De La Soul's Keepin' the Faith, while Warren G's Regulate samples it as well. Angela was used by Souls of Mischief on Cab Fare, and El Verano from BJ4 (1977) features in Blown Away by the Cocoa Brovaz and NY Confidential by Masta Ace. N.W.A.'s Alwayz into Somethin' incorporates a sample from Storm King on Three, and Redman's Cant Wait samples Caribbean Nights from Touchdown. English Drum Westchester Lady on Circles (1995) was sampled for Ryksopp's Eple, and Andr 3000 mentions James in a verse on Black Ice from Still Standing by Goodie Mob.
