About the Event

The Night Moves tour van is a wrecked Ford E-350, its blue paint faded and cracked after years of service. The catalytic converter has been removed three times, leaving only straight pipes that let exhaust fumes escape through holes in the metal sides. Wheel wells are broken open. John Pelant was writing Double Life when someone stole the license plates right after he bought new tags. He wondered who would steal a plate for what? But he soon turned that frustration into a song called Daytona, which paints an image of someone trying to rebuild their life. The final verse says you only wanted a win and there's no chance I'll see you again. His voice holds irritation but mostly acceptancehe can't understand another person's struggles and has his own problems. That spirit drives Double Life, a warm and cool album built from rough musical breaks Pelant and Night Moves have faced in recent years. A father-in-law died unexpectedly, then a drummer developed contact dermatitis that caused skin to flake off during recording. Friends were arrested for mistakes made in hard times, while others struggled with sobriety and mental health. And again came the question of when artists must take on adult responsibilities, especially as Pelant thought seriously about marriage for the first time. Pelant writes music firstinspired by Glen Campbell, Bobby Caldwell's Cleaners from Venus, early 90s country, Panda Bear, and Gram Parsonsand then adds lyrics after letting a tune sit awhile. This time those songs are direct accounts of Pelant's life as he looks for silver linings or valuable meanings during a moment when very little seemed bright. Double Life is about moving forward without leaving everything behind.
