About the Event
For Jon Muq, singer-songwriter born in Uganda now residing in Austin, Texas, music serves as part of an ongoing dialogue he engages with the world and its inhabitants. Blending African and Western musical traditions, he crafts songs like small offerings intended to settle into daily existence while encouraging contemplation and strength. Today, Muq notes that the world is sorrowful, so I chose to compose uplifting pieces. My aim was to create songs that resonate deeply with listeners on a personal level. When someone hears my work, it transcends simply me or what I am singing; it becomes how each person interprets the lyrics individually. These compositions can convey many meanings depending on what one seeks from them. Muqs childhood in Uganda and adult life in America provide him with a distinctive viewpoint on the issues he addresses. I grew up experiencing hardship where so many people suffer because they lack resources. Our primary struggle was food insecurity. Then I moved to a different world, which gave me insight into how to write songs that find balance for everyone regardless of their circumstances. With his May 31st debut album produced by Dan Auerbach and upcoming tours featuring Billy Joel, Norah Jones, Mavis Staples, Amythyst Kiah, Corinne Bailey Rae, and others, Muq is broadening the reach of his music to connect with an ever-growing audience.
