About the Event

The Sammy Deleon and Jackie Warren Quartet presents an evening of live Latin jazz at B Side Lounge. Doors open at 6:30 PM; show begins promptly at 7 PM. Admission is $10 in advance or $12 at the door.Sammy DeLeon, a prominent timbales player throughout Northeast Ohio and a cornerstone of its Latin jazz community, grew up in Lorain to non-musical parents who introduced him to percussion through an older brother. He joined the drum corps as a teenager and turned professional by age thirteen. After high school he played with Cobra, a Latin rock group, before joining Orquesta Charambo and later Impacto Nuevo. For ten years he has led his own ensemble opening for major acts including El Gran Combo, Tito Rojas and Tony Vega. He regularly mentors student percussionists in Latin rhythms; his band is known as Sammy Salsa College. Cleveland audiences appreciate the infectious dance music he brings to every performance.Jackie Warren, a native of Colorado, moved to Ohio following recommendations from teachers Patricia Warren, Myra Boitos, Charles Day and Steve Barta to study classical piano at Oberlin Conservatory with Sedmara Zakarian Rutstein, where she earned a Bachelor of Music in performance. During her studies there she also pursued jazz arranging, composition and theory under Wendell Logan, who became a mentor, and worked on jazz piano with Neal Creque and improvisation with Kenny Davis. She completed a Master of Music at Cleveland State University in classical piano performance studying with Andrius Kuprevicius and Daniel Barber while continuing lessons with Creque; she has remained based in Cleveland since then.Jackie performs regularly as a solo artist but also leads her own jazz trio featuring bassist Peter Dominguez and drummer Ron Godale. She arranges and plays salsa and Latin jazz with percussionist Sammy Deleon y Su Orquesta. Beyond these groups, she has performed locally and nationally with artists including David Fathead Newman, Benny Bailey, Clark Terry, Frank Morgan, Bobby Watson, Frank Foster, Jane Bunnett and the Spirits of Havana, Los Munequitos de Matanzas, Othello Molineaux, Donald Harrison, Gerald Wilson, Jimmy Heath, Impacto Nuevo, Humberto Ramirez, Cano Estremera, Tommy Olivencia, Tony Vega, Tito Rojas Jr., Hector Tricoche, Percy Sledge, King Solomon, the Tuscarawas Philharmonic, the Jazz Heritage Orchestra, the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and the Afro Cleveland Orchestra.
