About the Event

Isaiah J. Thompson, a pianist and composer hailing from West Orange, New Jersey, began his musical journey under the tutelage of Alla Epelbaum at The Calderone School of Music before studying with Bob Mikula. He quickly joined Jazz House Kids and NJPAC's Jazz For Teens programs. Later admitted to The Juilliard School, he earned both a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees there, followed by graduate studies in Christian Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary. In 2019, Thompson joined the John Pizzarelli Trio and has since performed with prominent musicians including Christian McBride, Steve Turre, Catherine Russell, and Buster Williams. His recording debut appeared on the Handful of Keys album featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis; he has since released several albums as a leader. Thompson contributed to the Golden Globe-nominated soundtrack for Motherless Brooklyn, was named a Steinway Artist, and received accolades such as the 2018 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award and second place in the 2018 Thelonious Monk Competition. In 2023 he won the American Pianists Awards and the Cole Porter Fellowship in Jazz; in 2024 he joined The Juilliard School's Jazz Studies Faculty. As a jazz musician, Thompson seeks to express love, spirit, and reverence through his artistry while conveying his faith.
